About the authors:

Dr. Michael Liepman passed away peacefully while surrounded by his loving family. Michael was devoted to his family and to his career as an Addiction Psychiatrist. Spanning four decades, his career was focused on helping those struggling with addiction reclaim their lives from the grasp of substance abuse. Dr. Liepman’s approach to addiction medicine changed how substance abuse was treated and its public perception. He graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School and completed a psychiatry residency there. A natural teacher, Dr. Liepman trained many medical students; the lessons he taught will live on. He also provided training to hundreds of law enforcement officers and first responders to enable them to administer the life-saving treatment, naloxone, to individuals with opioid overdose. He found joy in sharing his knowledge whenever and wherever he could be helpful. His passionate and enduring service to the community took many forms, especially as a Board Member of Mothers of Hope and as a working member and supporter of the Community Healing Centers. For his achievements, Dr. Liepman recently was honored as the recipient of the Elizabeth Upjohn Healing Families Award. Dr. Liepman is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren and extended family. A private memorial celebration will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, it was Dr Liepman’s wish that contributions be made to Mothers of Hope or Community Healing Center or the Drug Treatment Court Fund c/o Kalamazoo Foundation. Dr. Liepman engaged in a tireless mission to make the world a better place, and because of his remarkable perseverance, he succeeded.
